Common problems
Four fridge problems that come up a lot in North Texas homes, with the usual causes behind each one. Try the quick check first. If it doesn't help, give us a call.
Most fridges are designed for indoor rooms. A closed garage in a Texas summer gets far hotter, so the compressor runs nonstop and still can't pull the temperature down.
Garage dust, leaves and pet hair coat the coils under the fridge, so it can't release heat. In a hot garage that's often what tips it over.
The start relay and overload work harder in high heat and fail sooner. You may hear a click every few minutes and feel no cooling at all.
Hold your hand near the bottom grille while it runs. If you feel little warm air, vacuum the coils and give the fridge a few inches from the wall. Still warm after a day? Call us.
Weak flow means the ice tray never fills all the way, so the cubes come out small or only half formed.
If it reads the cubes as frozen too early, the ice maker dumps them before they set, leaving thin hollow shells.
Above 0°F the cubes freeze slowly and unevenly, turn cloudy and stick together in the bin.
Set the freezer to 0°F. If the water filter is older than six months, replace it and watch the next few batches of ice.
When the coils under the fridge are packed with dust, more heat has to escape through the side panels, and they get hot to the touch.
The small fan near the compressor pulls air across the coils. Once it stops, heat builds up in the cabinet walls.
A fridge squeezed between tight cabinets or pushed against the wall can't move warm air away from its sides and back.
Warm sides are normal on many models. If they're too hot to keep your hand on, listen at the back for the fan and look under the front grille for dust on the coils.
Sediment and minerals collect in the filter over the months and choke the flow to the dispenser.
Hard water leaves scale on the valve's small screen, which cuts the flow to both the dispenser and the ice maker.
A line pinched behind the fridge after it was moved, or low water pressure in the house, slows the stream to a trickle.
Replace the filter if it's older than six months, then pull the fridge out and look for kinks in the line behind it. If the flow is still weak, the valve may need replacing.
