Common problems
Four dishwasher problems we get calls about in Little Elm kitchens, with the usual causes behind each one. Try the quick check first. If it doesn't help, give us a call.
The drain hose connects to the disposal or sink drain under the counter. A loose clamp drips every time the dishwasher pumps out.
The hot water line that feeds the dishwasher runs from under the sink. A worn fitting or washer seeps during every fill.
If your sink has an air gap, a cracked body or a clog inside it sends drain water out onto the counter or into the cabinet.
Put a dry paper towel under the sink and run a short cycle. Wet at the disposal means the drain hose; wet at the shutoff valve means the supply line.
Food bits and scale block the small holes in the upper arm, so the top rack only gets a weak spray.
Many racks have a port at the back that has to line up with the water inlet. A rack pushed in crooked gets no water at all.
A clogged inlet screen or a weak valve lets in too little water, and the top rack is the first to go short.
Take off the upper spray arm, rinse it and clear the holes with a toothpick. Then make sure the rack slides all the way in and lines up with the port at the back.
A lid or utensil that slips through the bottom rack can land on the hot element and melt during the dry cycle.
A motor with worn bearings or a jammed impeller runs hot and gives off a sharp electrical smell.
Loose connections in the door or at the junction box heat up and scorch the wire insulation.
Turn the dishwasher off at the breaker. Once it's cool, look at the element on the floor of the tub for melted plastic. If the smell came from under the unit, leave it off and call us.
A worn valve lets water seep into the tub even when the dishwasher is off.
If the hose isn't looped up under the counter, sink water can flow back into the dishwasher.
A clogged disposal or air gap pushes water back down the drain hose into the tub.
Look at the drain hose under the sink. It should rise up toward the counter before it drops to the drain. If it runs flat, raise it and secure it high.
